Visitor’s Guide to a Day in Sedgefield, County Durham

A Guide to Visiting Sedgefield

Are you planning a so-called staycation this year? Are you thinking about visiting County Durham on your holiday?

Maybe you’re looking for somewhere that’s not too far to travel to or just some local day tripping inspiration for things to do?

I’ve got you covered if you’re planning a trip to County Durham. In this journal post, I’ll be talking about the small but bustling town of Sedgefield, where I’ll be hosting some upcoming jewellery making workshops! Be sure to check those out first - then read on for my suggestions of the top things to do in the area! It’s easy to spend a day in Sedgefield with a few insider tips.

Sedgefield lies a 20-minute drive away from the historical City of Durham. It’s not a huge town but it has real charm and plenty of local shops, restaurants and things to do nearby.

I remember when I first visited this town, unsure of things to do to spend a day in Sedgefield, but local knowledge was that there’s a very good tearoom here, and there was a farmers’ market in the town square; there was a lovely feeling that the locals were keen to support their small independent businesses and this can be said for the rest of the town too! I think this is what makes this small town so diverse and unique. It’s definitely worth a day visit!

Here’s how your day in Sedgefield might look:

Morning:

  • It wouldn’t be a trip to Sedgefield without visiting Number 4, a traditional tearoom offering up the best selection of cakes, pies, afternoon teas and of course, brunch. When I’m visiting Sedgefield, I can’t resist a visit; their cheesecakes are amazing as well as their quiche. But honestly, I’ve never made a bad decision when placing my order here. The cakes can change regularly too so it’s great to see what looks good on the day!

  • Have a browse along the main street at some of the independent shops and boutiques. Some to check out include Tickety Boo; a gift shop selling a variety of gifts for any special occasion, Betty’s Boudoir; an independent boutique selling ladies fashion and accessories and From Loft to Loved (where our workshops are hosted) for beautiful homewares and gifts. If you’re a ceramicist, a visit to Sedgefield Pottery would be a great place to stock up on supplies.

  • Visit The Square, where you can find From Loft to Loved; a small home and gift shop with a passion for recycling and creativity. This is where I’ll be holding some metalsmithing workshops where you can come along with me and make your own silver jewellery using traditional goldsmithing skills. Afternoon:

  • There are a few places to choose for a lunchtime treat: Julia & Sofia’s serves up authentic Italian cuisine and the pizzas look amazing! The Aubergine Cafe has a great selection for breakfast too, and an ideal light lunch selection.

  • Take a stroll to Hardwick Park if the weather’s looking good. It’s a lovely green space where you can take a stroll along the edge of the pond — entry is free too.

  • If you’d prefer more adventure; there’s a golf course down the road at Knotty Hill that also offers foot golf. There’s plenty of things to do in and around town when you spend a day in Sedgefield to entertain the rest of the family. Especially if you’re treating yourself to some ‘me time’ with a jewellery making workshop.

Evening:

  • If you fancy spending some time down the pub, The Corner House is family friendly with a play park and beer garden (for the big kids!).

  • Sometimes Sedgefield Racecourse has ladies events in the evenings too if you fancy a ladies night out. If you’re there on a Sunday morning they also have a car boot sale.

  • Evening plans wouldn’t be complete without dinner! I’d check out Herd & Herb; it’s the No1 Rated restaurant here and the food looks amazing! The Impeccable Pig serves up bistro-style dining  and The Pickled Parson is a modern style pub supporting local farmers and producers. There’s much more to choose from too!

If you fancy staying over in Sedgefield there are also numerous places to accommodate you on your visit. For a cosy apartment, The Hay Loft offers just that; and many guests have claimed it’s haunted too if you fancy adding some thrills to your stay!

For something that’s more in the countryside, then The Granary at Todd’s House Farm is an entire cottage that can be rented and is still within walking distance of the town. If you’re planning to unwind on this visit, then you can find Wynyard Hall Hotel and Spa as your go-to place for rest and relaxation, just a short drive away.

I hope you’ve found this things to do guide useful for your next visit to Sedgefield in County Durham. Whether it’s for a day trip or a longer break there’s something for everyone.
